About Us
At its 20th anniversary 0n 30th July 2022, MCCY did a refresh and renamed Inter-racial and Religious Confidence Circle (IRCC) to Race & Religious Harmony Circle (HC). Siglap Harmony Circle (SHC), is one of the 93 HC set up in Singapore.
As Singapore is a multi-racial and multi-religious society, maintaining racial and religious harmony is crucial for its social cohesion. Harmony does not come naturally as it takes a lot of time and effort to inculcate trust, move away from tolerance to acceptance between different races and religions and to protect the common space that we share.
So why is it important for our country to maintain racial and religious harmony?
We need to do this to ensure national unity by minimising differences and avoiding conflict within society. Accepting another person for who they are is a crucial step toward building the ability to coexist.
How do we achieve harmony in Singapore?
1. Multiculturalism: We encourage Singapore’s different ethnic groups to come together as one united people, without giving up their cultural heritage or beliefs. At the same time, our common national identity takes precedence over our ethnic or religious identities. We have social interactions in ethnically inclusive settings to promote intercultural understanding. These interactions could be held at neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces, etc.
2. Secularism: Singapore is a secular state but it is not against religion. Everyone has the right to practise their religion freely. Open dialogues on issues that affect different ethnic communities (especially minorities) are held. While religious organisations are consulted on policy matters that may have an impact on their community, the Government reserves the right to make the final decision.
3. Meritocracy: All Singaporeans are given equal opportunities; based on their individual merit and performance, without bias to any race, creed or social-economic background. While this may not result in equal outcomes, it guarantees that all Singaporeans are given a fair chance to succeed according to their own talent and effort.
