In the early days, migrants of various races settled in a tiny stretch of land called Kampong Bencoolen and lived harmoniously together. Today, with our SHC youth members, we went on a learning journey to visit the various faiths that have settled down in this Kampong. We started off by visiting the Sri Krishnan temple located at Waterloo Street. It is the second oldest Hindu temple in Singapore and it was set up 153 years ago by a wealthy merchant (Hanuman Beem Singh) who set up a shrine for Lord Krishna at the base of a banyan tree. We then visited the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho temple which is located next to the Indian temple. It can be seen that devotees from both temples come to pray at both temples. The next stop was at Middle Road church. It is a small church which used to be called the Malay church as the sermons to Peranakans was in Malay. Today it is used as an art gallery. We then visited Masjid Bencoolen which is 200 years old and it is the oldest mosque in Singapore. It was recently renovated and looks new. We next moved on to visit the Jewish synagogue which is located next to Jacob Ballas Centre. We passed by the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd and ended up at Armenian Church. We were given a tour of the church and it’s grounds.
